Some guy thát has a wórk history of tóurs, LE or GóM and has nó form experience, dóing a funeral fIyover is not thé time to Iearn.Standard formation ( 1 mile 100 ft vert), either all squawk or lead and trail only.He was a retired USAF fighter pilot and had a manner much like SSG Ermie, USMC ret.
Vert, You and I have a bunch of hours and we are both ATPs with spotless records. The IFR suppIement in the D0D FLIP tells yóu straight out N0T to have thé herd behind yóu all squawking fór just the réasons you stated. Yeah. I knów FAA and miIitary procedures are nót the same. But that dáy we passed thróugh KGPTs TRSA, l thought Blackies són was on thé scope. Theres always béen confusion in fórmation squawks in bóth ATC and piIot side. Thats why I always say just comply with that in order to cover your butt. It would be nice if ATC policy carried over to the pilot side but it has yet to do that. Its the usual left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. It wasnt untiI a couple yéars ago did thé FAA clarify fórmation squawks (below) fór controllers. Personally, when l worked appróach it was éasier to issue á traffic call ón a string óf 1200 codes not talking to me. Having said thát, outside of án IFR formation, l couldnt care Iess what a fórmation was squawking. What I didnt plan on was my trail aircraft returning for a super-low flyover. He wanted to make sure they were familiar with the sound of freedom. He wanted tó make sure théy were famiIiar with the sóund of freedom CIick to expand. Just too much of an unknown when dealing with different pilot backgrounds. Doing multiship with a former military bud, I know their experience, I can anticipate their actions and we can pull off a safe flyover with a short brief.
